Elgin Shores Forest Preserve
772 South State Street
Elgin, IL
Elgin, IL
Description
Elgin Shores is actually two parts divided by the river. The west side adjoins a complex of state properties as well as the river. Approximately one-third of the site is leased to the City of Elgin for Little League fields.
The east side is primarily for the trail system. It was excess property of the Elgin Sanitary District, abandoned railroads and old industrial sites. The Fox River Trail joins the Illinois Prairie Path at this point. Trail users can proceed into Elgin or go to Wheaton and points south from this junction.
By quirks of nature, the natural history of the site is unique. Extensive sand deposits have lead to habitats for a number of Kane County's unusual plants, such as the Naked Sunflower and the Purple Coneflower.
