The Forest Preserve District offers a variety of hands-on, environmental education programs in which students explore and experience the natural wonders of Kane County. We offer two types of school programs: outdoor field trips within any of the Kane County forest preserves and traveling naturalist programs at your school or other location. Field trips are offered year-round. Traveling naturalist programs are typically done during the winter months and include an indoor presentation.

There is no charge for Kane County public schools for either field trips or traveling naturalist programs. Kane County private school traveling-naturalist programs have a fee of $25/one-hour program. For all out-of-county schools, there is a fee of $50 per one-hour traveling-naturalist program. Private and homeschool field trips are charged at the community rate of $2/person, with a minimum of $25/group.

Schools are also encouraged to visit the forest preserves as self-guided groups. We have "discovery packs" for loan, which are filled with fun, trail-side activities to complete during a hike. Self-guided groups must contact us to schedule a group program or field trip.
